Burglar Alarms

Before installing a burglar alarm try to put yourself in the mind of a burglar and second-guess what they might do. Do not forget the more simple common sense physical security measures like locking doors, putting locks on windows, taking keys out of locked doors, installing 5 lever locks, bolts and grills.  Keep car keys out of sight, handbags and wallets off of the chair by the window, etc.

4 out of 5 burglaries occur when there is know one at home.  Do not advertise the fact that you are away.  Remember to cancel the milk, get a neighbour to pick the mail up for you or for a small sum the Post Office can hold the mail for you while you are away.  Curtains drawn in the daytime can be an indication that the occupants are away.  Try to mow the lawn just before you leave or better still get a neighbour to run over it for you while you are away.  If you give your house keys to a trusted neighbour ask them not to put your house number on them in case they fall into the wrong hands. Do not cancel the papers in front of a shop full of people and do not have your address on your cases during your outbound journey.  The fewer people that know you are away and know your address the safer your property will be. A good investment is one of the plug in security switches that switch on with a timer.  Plugging a table lamp into one of these will make your house look occupied during the evening hours.

Try to work with your neighbours to look after empty property while the occupants are on holiday. Try to check the windows and doors frequently and don’t hesitate to telephone the police if anything untoward is spotted.

Take a look at your garden, are your garden tools locked away and are their any items left outside that might aid the burglar in gaining entry into your house.  If you own a set of ladders either lock them inside the garage or shed, or padlock them to a secure bracket outside.

Q. Hi, I hope you can help me. I have a burglar alarm with a Veritas remote keypad. Does a "user manual" exist for this product ? I can find installation manuals all over the internet but the company who make this don't seem to produce a user manual for the poor idiot who is stupid enough to have one installed. Any ideas ? Q. I have an accenta g4 alarm 8SP411A, recently if the power has been turned off at the supply board, the alarm has activated and date and time changed to start up time - 00:00. All other information is still held ie. zones/programs. Does this mean I might have a problem with the panel and need to purchase a new alarm panel (I have turned the power off to the alarm and the battery kicks in okay and runs for hours, so I don't think it's battery issue) Wondered if you have come across this before so grateful for advice. Thanks Mark

Good Afternoon Mark

Q. Hi, Is the I-ON 16 a hybrid alarm system? We have a wired system at present and want to replace some of it with wireless and keep some wired PIRS. If not, what keypad do I need to buy with the I-ON 30 alarm - it is a little confusing since it shows a keypad but states it is only the panel included?

Good Afternoon Jill,

The ION-16 is a Keypad and Panel - it can be wireless and wired,

The ION-30 is just the panel, you would need to buy the keypad aswell as its sold separately

Hope this Helps

Q. Evening Support Team. I have purchased and installed a Speech Dialler ( Code TSD?) All set up and commissioned ok, dails out ok with no problems except it interferes with the phone system on incomming calls when in the standby mode.. Both parties, caller and receiver, only hear a high pitch tone, and the phone will only ring one or two times. I have broadband so the phone is connected via a filter. I have tried connecting both phone and dialer to one filter vie a double connecter, also tried using the double connector in the phone socket and using two filters to separate the kit. This makes no difference. Sorry this has been a bit long winded but, wanted to give you as much info as possible. Hope you are able to assist. Kind Regards. Alan.

Recently the front door bleeper when I re-enter the house isn't sounding (so I sometimes inadvertently set off the full alarm by forgetting to input my code). Q. How to design a home burglar alarm system

Survey your home and determine how many windows and doors you want to be protected by your home security system.

Determine possible locations for the control panel and keypads. You might find it convenient to place a keypad close to the front door. You might also want a keypad close to the bedrooms. The control panel is the 'brains' of the system, and the keypads allow you to program the control panel and turn it, or its components, on and off.

Determine how far away windows and doors are from the control panel so that you know how far burglar alarm cables will be routed if you choose a wired alarm system or how far a wireless system needs to communicate with sensors. Bare in mind that it can be difficult to install a hard-wired security system unless your house is still under construction or you plan to re-decorate.

Decide whether you want a monitored security system that will be monitored 24 hours a day. The central monitoring station 'watches' your home for a monthly fee. Burglar alarm systems monitored by a central station should be installed by a professional burglar alarm installer.  A less expensive alternative is a basic sensor system with a telephone autodialer  that connects the system to your phone lines and dials preselected numbers if the house's home alarm is breached.

Consider your lifestyle. Does anyone in the family often get up in the middle of the night for a snack? Do you have a large pet that roams the house at night? Such circumstances will influence the type of motion sensor you select and how it is installed. It may also call for you or members of your family to take trips to the keypad to prevent false alarms.

Choosing a System

Choose a system with a control panel that can monitor all the zones you have in your home. Each window or door integrated into the system is considered a zone. A basic system is capable of controlling eight zones. However, many panels, like the Texecom Premier series,  permit the addition of expansion modules that allow the system to watch up to 32 zones.

Determine if the routing of the wires for a hard-wired security system might be too long. With a wired system, you will have to drill holes in walls where wires will have to be routed. If the wire run appears too long to you, choose a wireless system. Make certain that a wireless system can perform up to the distance of the farthest zone although this can be increased by use of a range extender.

Be certain that the system you choose can accept fire-protection sensors, carbon monoxide sensors and combustible-gas detectors, anti-freeze-up low-temperature switches (especially in cold climates) and water detectors. Make sure that panic buttons are or can be included.

Choose a system that is user-friendly. Make certain that inputting codes into the keypad is not a complicated process and is one that everyone in the family can learn quickly. You don't want to have to refer to the owner's manual as you input or try to interpret codes.

Work the keypad of the system you select to assure yourself that it is easy to use. Encourage all family members to work the keypad so that you will select one that everyone can use comfortably.

Q. my verates 8c control panael has just given up the ghost after 9 years of service. Does this mean I have to buy another or do I need a new battery which has never been changed?

It is recommended that the control panel batteries are changed after about 5 to 6 years. You could try this first before replacing the full system.

Q. where can i get hold of a user manual for a veritas 8c

If you forward us your postal address we will request a manual to be sent from Texecom direct to you.

Q. i can not reset my pcx-12 alarm as i have no manual canyou send me a manual please

Q. Can you recommend a good burglar alarm to make a residential alarm system please?

Most of the burglar alarm components that we sell on alertelectrical.com will make a good residential alarm system.  To make your selection easier we have tried to assemble some complete alarm systems from the most popular manufacturers like Texecom, Phttp://www.alertelectrical.com/prod/986/pyronix-sterling-10-lcd-intruder-alarm-system-kityronix and Honeywell ADE.  Each and every home is different so you should customise each kit byadding your own extra components to suit your individual circumstances, like a telephone autodialler that will telephone pre-determined numbers in the even of the system going in to alarm.

Q. Alarm system is Veritas R8 Plus.the system has 3 PIR. Every now and then the internal sounder of the alarm sets itself off.The system does not accept my code to stop . It does however eventually stop by itself. I bought the house only three years ago and the house is about 9 years old.Should I be changing the battery to eliminate the problem Regards

It is recommended that the battery is changed after about 5 to 6 years if you contact the manufacture of the control panel Texecom they will be able to advise if it is the battery or you have a fault on the panel. TECHNICAL:01706 234800

Q. I have an Infinite Wireless Burglar Alarm System. I recently had all new external doors and windows fitted to my property and I removed serveral sensors in order for the work to be done. I deleted the devices but now cannot reinstall them I have tried initialization of the system but it still does not register the transmitters. The system reports that there are no devices. Can you please advise. Thanks CM

If you contact the technical department at ESP they will be able to advise what the problem is also advise how to reinstall the sensors. TECH 0121 7861881

Q. I do not have any instructions for my alarm system. The control panel has the name C & K Securitech and the box on the outside of the house has the name Detec. Can you please help

C&K Securitech are now owned by Honeywell.  You can download user guides for the C&K Securitech SEC800L and Securit 802 on our Honeywell Burglar Alarms userguides download page

Q. I had a Texecom Veritas R8 alarm system fitted 12 years ago when we moved into new house, we have had no problems until recently when tamper light flashed up and now unable to set alarm. I have called an electrician out who has tested various things and now is requesting an engineering manual so he can get access to enginering code. Is there anywhere i can get a copy of the engineering manual? The electrician who fitted the alarm doesnt work at company any longer?

Our website, www.alertelectrical.com, has a Burglar Alarm User Guide section where you can find a user guide for the Texecom Veritas R8. However, because of the security implications we do not supply burglar alarm engineer manuals without the purchase of a burglar alarm panel. You should consult the manufacturer www.texe.com or contact a local burglar alarm installation engineer

Q. I am looking for an alarm system that works outside - it senses movement before anyone reached your door. Up to 50m or more metres away. Possibly a 4 - 6 zone setting. What would you suggest and cost please? Also can I set it up myself? Thank you.

Takex Beam detectors are designed to be used outdoors and trigger an alarm system when the beams are broken.  You need to connect it to a burglar alarm control panel in the same way you would normally add a detector to a burglar alarm system.  You can find prices and specifications by clicking on the link.  Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. hi there , wonder if you can help me please. my present alarm system is fitted with a pyronix magnum ' e ' pir's and at this present time one of these has gone faulty. i understand you stock the magnum 'e' meq blue pir that i understand is compatible. would it be possible to confirm this is so and if so do you carry the same in stock and what would be the costs etc. thank you in anticipation

Good Afternoon Michael  Thank you for your email, if you click on the following link to the pir's we have these in stock delivery would be next day. Delivery on this would be £6.00+vat .  Please don't hesitate to contact us if you require any further information.

Disadvantages: Labour intensive, only monitors openings, not the glass itself

Shock sensors

Advantages:  Very good for covering a small area including openings and glass, time saving.

Disadvantages: Need careful setting up.

Glass break detector

Advantages:  Very good for detecting the sound of glass breaking over a fairly large area.  Easy to install.

Disadvantages: Only monitors for breaking glass, does not detect forced opening.

I hope that helps

Q. I have a 9800 panel which was fitted in approximately 1992. The panel needs to be replaced. Please can you advise which current model of panel best matches the 9800, to minimise rewiring the house?

Thank you for your enquiry, if you click on the following link to the Scantronic 9651 this would be a suitable replacement for your control panel. http://www.alertelectrical.com/Burglar-Intruder-Alarm-Systems/Alarm-Control-Panels/Scantronic-burglar-alarm-panels/Scantronic-9651EN-41-8-zone-control-panel-with-9941-rkp---English-9651EN-41.asp

Q. I am just wondering if you could help me, I am looking to purchase an alarm system from yourselves but would like to know what you would recommend. First of all I am wanting to install this myself so I would require something not to difficult for a DIY installation . I would need a system to cover 5 zones (3 x PIR and 2 Door Contacts), I would also like to have a chime facility on one of the zones, our living room is in the middle of our terraced house so it would be handy to have so we know when the front door is opened. I would also like it to have a remote keypad to keep things nice and tidy. I would also like to omit zones at night so that it can be set when we go to bed. I have looked at your Avanti LC Home Burglar Alarm System With LCD Remote Keypad but would still like to know what you recommend. I noticed there is an option with this panel that you can have a fob that does a night time and day time activation and feel this would make it really simple for my wife to set (I work nights and I think she would get stressed trying to remember two different codes for two different types of activation). If at all possible you could help me that would be most appreciated. Would you also let me know how long it takes for delivery as I am going to require one asap.

Your requirements are straightforward and within the scope of our standard systems.  To create a chime facility you need only to set the required zone as ‘entry/exit’ and then set it to chime.  The problem with the Avanti LC system is that the instructions are a little bit brief.  They do however have an excellent technical helpline open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

The other option would be the Kit 4 Texecom VR8 kit which is a similar specification to the Avanti system but with slightly more comprehensive instructions but it doesn’t have LCD rkp.  The ‘Red For Bed’ tag facility is unique to the Avanti system

I think you would probably be best going with the Avanti system.

Q. Could you please advise on what type of PIR detector I should use with the Scantronic 9751 alarm system and whether I need any other components for a house alarm system

Thank you for your enquiry, any of the wired pirs will work with the panel, if you click on the following link to our range of complete alarm kits this will give you an idea of what is required.

http://www.alertelectrical.com/cat/2/complete-burglar-alarm-systems-and-kits

Q. Does the Texecom Veritas R8 burglar alarm control panel include transformer and battery ? If not which transformer and battery would i need ?

Many thanks for you're valued enquiry. The VR8 includes a transformer in the panel, but you would have to purchase the battery seperate. If you click on the following link to the battery required 2.4ah 12v Back Up Battery For Burglar Alarm Control Panels - AB21. Please do not hesitate to contact if you have any further questions, assuring you of our most careful attention at all times,

Q. I have a 9448+style unit fitted to my house. I have recently had an extension added to the side of the garage (not attached to the main house), can I buy components such as additional PIR sensors which will attach remotely (possibly by radio signal) to the main house system. Alternatively is there a seperate system which can be purchased which has its own key pad/remote control for set/disarm which can have an external alarm siren and an internal (inside the house) siren. Could this system be a wireless system?

You can use an Infinite 8 channel wireless receiver for Infinite wireless detectors.  These are designed to be added to an existing burglar alarm to give wireless burglar alarm detector functionality.

Q. The original wireless systems were prone to being scanned by burglars for the input code. Is this still a problem or has this now been resolved. How safe are they now.

It is true that wireless alarms built up a reputation for being unreliable and prone to false alarms.  However, at least for the last 10 years, as long as the alarm purchased is of reasonable quality you will not have a problem with a wireless alarm and you certainly will not have a problem that a potential burglar could compromise a well designed installation.  The old wireless burglar alarms used to run on 468mhz which was shared by many other wireless devices but modern wireless systems have come on a long way since they were first launched.  The Infinite uses 868Mhz FM to create a strong clear signal for up to 200m in free air, or approximately 90m through walls depending on conditions.  The control panel has a signal strength indicator allowing easy determination of these factors.  The FM transmitters within the system have high security data encryption making use of a rolling code facility which makes the chances of any other transmitters accidentally using the frequency highly unlikely, in the ratio of 1,000 000s : 1.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. Please can you tell me if its possible to buy a replacement c& k 700L alarm keypad, as ours is old anyway with some keys worn out and has recently blown up - during snow we had a power cut and it set alarm off and half the panel doesnt light up now and it won't operate the alarm! thanks

Thank you for your email, if you click on the following link http://www.alertelectrical.com/Burglar-Intruder-Alarm-Systems/Alarm-Control-Panels/Intellisense-Securit-control-panels/Intellisense-Securit-800L-Remote-Keypad-SEC800LRKP.asp this keypad is compatible with your panel.

Q. Hello, i would like to know if detectors exist for the outside of the house (to install in the garden for instance). what price is it ? thank you

Hello.  Yes, Takex manufacture a range of beam detectors specifically for outside use.  They should be connected to a spare zone in a burglar alarm control panel.

Q. Could you tell me please does the 9448eur90 panel come with a battery?

Hi

No the 9448eur90 does not come with a back up battery, you should order an AB21.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. Hi I have a Paragon Plus alarm system installed and would like to know if I can still purchase the alarm panel as the one I have has finally given up the ghost. If not is there a replacement I can purchase that is very similar.?

Thank you for your email, unfortunately the panel is now obsolete, you could replace the panel with any of the wired panels have a look at the Scantronic 9448eur-90  or the Texecom V8C.   Both of these panels would be a suitable replacement. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you require any further information.

Q. I have an Optima Compact and I believe that the Back-up battery has failed. Most of the lights are on and none of the buttons are working. I recently had a new electricity meter fitted and it failed immediately they finished fitting it. Firstly, do you think I may be correct in assuming that the battery has expired and secondly, do you sell them, and if so at what price including postage.

Yes sounds like the battery if you click on the following link to the replacement battery http://www.alertelectrical.com/Burglar-Intruder-Alarm-Systems/Burglar-Alarm-Batteries/21ah-12v-Back-Up-Battery-For-Burglar-Alarm-Control-Panels-AB21.asp Delivery would be £6.00 + vat. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you require any further information

Q. i was wondering whether you could give me some advice before ordering ,will the infinite wirefree sounder work with a accenta g4 wired system ? if not do u do one ? would you still need to run a wire from the control panel to the loft for the bell box ?

If you already have an Accenta G4 then your only option will be to hard wire a bell box or start again with a wireless system that can take a wireless bellbox. Infinite do manufacture a retrofit receiver for hard wired systems like the ADE Accenta but this is for wireless detectors and not for wireless bellboxes.

Q. We have a scantronic 9455 alarm which requires a new battery can you tell me where I can get hold of one please?

Thank you for your email, if you click on the following link to the replacement battery required. http://www.alertelectrical.com/prod/563/24ah-12v-back-up-battery-for-burglar-alarm-control-panels

Q. I must have put in the wrong code and my alarm wouldn't stop, I managed to stop it but now it says Kitchen and if I go to kitchen it will go off what can I do to stop it?

First of all you will need your instructions for the alarm system.  The control panel appears to be telling you that the zone marked 'kitchen'is being triggered.  You should either clear the problem causing the alarm to trigger or consider omitting the zone temporarily to allow the system to be armed.  The instructions for omitting the zone will be found in your alarm instructions.  If you choose the latter option then you should immediately contact an alarm compancy to recitfy the problem with the zone.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. Does the Texecom Premier 24 require a PSU? 2. Is the Texecom 3 ah 12v battery (AB3) suitable for the Texecom Premier 24? many thanks, Nigel

No the Texecom Premier 2http://www.alertelectrical.com/prod/72/texecom-premier-24-8-24-zones-control-panel4 does not require a PSU as it has its own transformer inbuilt.  It can take any battery form 1.2ah to 7ah so the AB3 3ah battery would be suitable

Q. Hi Could you please advise me on the correct PIR to use in a conservatory and do you sellthem if so how much. Thanks Brian

Hi Brian

The correct PIR for a conservatory should be one with a high immunity to thermal movement.  Therefore in order of their ability to deal with heat I would advise the installation of:

1.       A Dual technology detector with combined microwave / PIR detection

2.       A quad PIR detector

The dual technology detector is immune as the microwave does not pick up heat at all.  They are more expensive and the range of the microwave needs careful setting up as the microwave can go straight through walls and windows and be triggered by a movement on the outside of the property.  Examples of these that we sell are:  Texecom Prestige DT, Scantronic 280En, Pyronix KX15DT and the ADE Activ8 DT

The quad PIR detector is better than standard as there are dual beams to be triggered but not as good as the dual technology detectors, although they are generally a lot cheaper.  Examples of these that we sell are: ADE Activ8 Quad PIR, Pyronix KX15DQ, Scantronic 220EN and the Texecom Prestige PRESQD

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. I have a Veritas 8c compact. I have had to change the battery. But since then I cannot get it to work normally, the 24hrs light just flashes red. It will not harm up. I have tried switching the power off but this as had no affect. What needs to be done.

Q. After a number of panel freezes and false alarms, I think it''s time to r eplace my alarm. I have a 1992 Europlex/Scopetronic HomeGuard. Could you please suggest a wired replacement system (simple requirements, just 3 zones) that lets me reuse existing wiring and detectors? Thanks

Hi Antonio

Any of our wired alarm panels will replace your old panel.  My recommendation would be:

  • Texecom Veritas 8C, they always come with comprehensive instructions
  • Mdt Avanti 8 these panels come pre-programmed so it saves you having to do to much on installation.

Both panels have 8 zones but that is the minimum these days.  They will both also need an AB21 back up battery.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. I have a veritas alarm, it keeps on going off ,so I think it needs a new battery but the company who installed it have finised business ,so I would like to replace it myself but I do not know how to take the battery cover off. can you help.

Q. Hi. I have just purchased KIT 1. The wiring diagram to join control panal to the AG6 is not right, The control box is marked T A D B S- S+ The bell box is marked. ST- R- SW- V+ V- could you please tell me which wires go where Yours Pete

Hi Peter

We had put the answer directly on to the product page for the kit 1 and Kit 2.  To save you the time here is the connections:

Avanti should be wired to Intellisense Bellbox as follows:

Avanti Panel:         T        A          D           B           S-          S+ (S+ doesnt get used as Intellisense Bell doesnt have 'ind' circuit)

Intellisense Bell:      T        V-        V+        SW        Stb

Let us know if you continue to have any further problems, thank you for your enquiry.

Q. Can we purchase a panel for a Scantronic 4600 alarm system as ours has been affected by lightening?

Thank you for your email , unfortunately the Scantronic 4600 has been discontinued. You would need to purchase a new Scantronic alarm panel. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you require any further information.

Q. Looking to buy a Texecom Veritas 8 compact controller and accessories, I will need a backup battery - can you recommend the battery and do I need an enclosure/fitting kit for the battery as it looks like it will not fit inside the controller. I was going to use an external Texecom Odyssey 4 sounder inside the premises - can I attach two of these to the controller - one inside and one outside, or do you recommend a different solution - I want the alarm to be so loud as to make it very uncomfortable and disorientating for burglars inside the premises

Thank you for contacting Alert Electrical Support.  If you contact Texecom on the following number 01706 220460 they will be able to advise you further.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. I recently bought an Mdt Avanti 8 burglar alarm panel from you, and I have fitted it succesfully. (I have fitted alarms in the past with no problems), however with yours I am having some difficuly setting it up. Firstly am I right in thinking that the engineer program has to be set up first, which I presume programs the zones, then the user or manager program is initialised ?

The new European Regulations means that unfortunately the status of alarm systems cannot be displayed to by-standers. All panels are now affected by this directive. With regards the programmes. Mdt Westech Avanti 8 is pre-programmed. Programme A (Away - Full Set) means that all 8 zones are protected. Programme B (Bed - Part Set) omits Zones 7 & 8. Programme * is left un-programmed. Within both programmes Zone 1 is Entry Exit, Zone 2 is Time Inhibited and all others are Immediate. The vast majority of installations are covered by these defaults and I would be very surprised if you had need to alter these. Day mode means that the alarm is not set. It will therefore only activate upon a Tamper or PA. Panels are either Set or in Day mode.

Q. I need a manual for a Veritas alarm unit.It is over 12 years old it may be an re model number.

Please click this link to Texecom User Guides.  I think the download you are looking for is the second listing.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. Which replacement battery should I choose for the Intellisense Securit 802 control panel?

Good Morning

The correct battery for this Unit will be the AB21

Q. How do connect the Avanti control panel to the Intellisense bellbox provided in your kits. I have had a look at the instructions but they dont completely match up with each other?

Over the last few days we've had a number of technical enquiries about connecting Avanti control panels to the Honeywell Intellisense AG6 Activeguard Bellboxes. The correct wiring should be the following:

Avanti should be wired to Intellisense Bellbox as follows: Avanti Panel:         T        A          D           B           S-          S+ (doesn't get used as Intellisense Bell doesn't have ind circuit)  Intellisense Bell:      T        V-        V+        SW        Stb

Q. Hi, I purchased an alarm kit from you three years ago, consisting of a Pyronix Sterling 10 Control Panel, Pyronix Belle, PIR's and Door Contact Switches. Everything was okay until about 6 months ago, when the alarm actuated for no obvious reason and then soon afterwards showed a tamper fault. Despite many efforts to clear this, including disconnecting the tamper zone altogether and looping it out, the fault would not clear. Trying to set the Control Panel simply put it into immediate full alarm. Pyronix Help Line were completely unhelpful in assisting me and really couldn't be bothered. I eventually had to resort to leaving the Control Panel in Engineer Mode, (which bypasses the Tamper circuitry) to maintain a working alarm. Now I have the Fault Symbol (!) flashing on the keypad showing four possible faults, such as fuses, power etc. All of these are okay. Now after setting the alarm (in Engineer Mode), the Entry/Exit mode for the front door does not work and upon opening the door the system goes into full alarm (it is programmed correctly). Bottom line is, I think it's time to give up on this Control Panel and the Belle Box by the way, whose sirens no longer work. I want to keep my existing wiring, PIR's and Door Contacts. Could you recommend a replacement control panel, keypad and siren box for me. I don't want a complex difficult to wire system that only a professional could understand but I do want something that has good functionality, eight zones plus, expandable to include fire zones and that will last longer than three years. Obviously my experience with Pyronix's Help Line has not endeared me to them. Hope you can help. Many thanks David Tatum

Good Morning

The most suitable panel for your application would be the 8SP399A and a suitable bell box would be 8EP420

Q. Hi, I'm just looking at your burglar alarm kits and was wondering if you would alter from the standard or do I need to create my own. The kit I'm looking at is Kit 11 Texecom Excel Burglar Alarm System With LCD Remote Keypad but I would like to alter the 4 included PIR's for 6 Prestige PET Immune (code: PRESPW). Q. home alarm systems faq

burglar alarm /intruder alarm is a proven deterrent against burglary and crime. There are two main types of burglar alarm, these are:

Bells only: - These systems rely on sounders to both deter the burglar and also warn neighbours of the intrusion. A system will normally have 1 external sounder as a minimum, this can be added to by having a internal siren as an extra deterrent inside the property, an additional decoy box on other exterior elevations to provide extra visual deterrent outside or an extra external sounder could also be used.

Monitored Systems: - These systems have all the features of the ‘bells only’ system with the addition of being monitored by a central station via a telephone line or radio link. When the alarm is triggered it sends a signal to the central station, which then notify the key holders and police of the alarm. These systems are a requirement of some contents policies, normally where this is the case it is also a requirement that an alarm installation company that is a member of an approved installations organisation installs them.

It is also possible to install a ‘telephone auto dialler’ onto a bells only system, which can notify a set of telephone numbers both static and mobile of the alarm activation. These have the advantage of immediate notification without incurring ongoing charges for central station monitoring.

The main components of a Burglar Alarm System are: -

Movement Detectors - to detect the burglar moving through the house

Door and Window Magnetic Contacts - to detect the opening of doors and windows

These are hard-wired or wireless radio-link to a: -

Control Panel - which processes the signals and sounds the bell or siren and/or alerts the Central monitoring station by telephone or radio link and/or alerts a number of people by telephone auto dialler.

Remote Keypad(s) - linked to the control panel so that the system can be set and unset by a code in different parts of the property

Bell or Siren - outside the property, out of reach of the intruder, a complete self contained unit with backup battery that will sound even if there is no power to it.

Whatever kind of system you have, it must be well installed and reliable.

It has to work correctly every time and not give false alarms.

Higher risk homes and business customers are investing in Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems. In this case you must decide whether you want surveillance of unauthorised activity or recognition of intruders.

Q. I have a Accenta alarm system, fitted approx. 1996. The bell box circuit board has corroded ( I think the part no. is 2BF 050/06/3-3) and no longer works. Can I obtain a replacement board or do I need to buy a new box? If a new box, which one is most suitable? Regards Arthur Jones

If you contact the manufacture Honeywell on the following number 01698 738570,  they will be able to give you the technical advice required

Q. How many detectors do I need for my house or business?

PIR's or 'Passive Infra-red Detectors are one of the most secure methods of detecting intrusion within the house. They monitor the background infrared level and when this level changes by someone, or something entering the monitored area, they send a signal to the control panel, which then goes into alarm.

To provide adequate cover for the house it is necessary to determine what are the areas where an intruder could gain entry and secondly what are the most sensitive areas that you would most like to protect.

At the very least there should be a detector in the hallway downstairs and upstairs. If the intruder gains entry he/she will have to cross these areas in order to move around the house. It is then necessary to look at the areas of the house where the intruder may gain entry and leave again via the same route with valuables and install a PIR in these areas. These areas might be the computer in the spare room or the jewellery box in the main bedroom. These areas should also have a PIR installed.

Q. In a 3 bedroom semi-detached house the average amount of detectors required is normally 4 or 5, 3 downstairs and 1 or 2 upstairs. In a detached house this figure increases to 5 or 6 as an average.

Burglar alarmIn order to install properly you should not install more than 1 detector per alarm zone on the control panel unless a 'latching' PIR is used. This is so that in the event of an alarm or false alarm it is possible to distinguish which detector caused the control panel to go into alarm. Latching PIR's have a visual indication on the detector that it has triggered but it is necessary to install 8-core cable for these to work. They are perhaps better suited to retrofit situations where additional detectors are required on an existing installation.

Most modern control panels have 8 alarm zones so it should be within the scope of the panel to install standard non-latching PIR's. If more than 8 PIR's are required and or 1 or more of the zones is being utilised as a panic or fire detection zone it would be better to step up to a 16 zone burglar alarm panel. At this moment we do not list one on our web site but you can email or telephone us and we will be glad to provide details.

The plan shows a basic layout of a smaller house. There are 3 PIR detectors installed on the ground floor with a further PIR installed in the landing area on the top floor. There is also a door contact protecting the front and back doors.

Q. I have an old 4 zone ADE panle. I want a panle that is the same size, with or without remoter keypad that has the facility to lock out a zone after a set number of activations from that zone. Will the new ADE panles do this?

If you contact the manufacture Honeywell on the following number 01698 738570,  they will be able to give you the technical advice required

Q. What are all the different types of detectors that are available?

a).Passive infrared detector Monitors movement within the property by means of infrared.

Advantages: Cost effective
Disadvantages: Does not tolerate large areas or large temperature changes.
b).Passive infrared pet immune detector by means of either lens masking or electronic circuitry the PIR is made to ignore animals under a certain weight while still monitoring the area.

Advantages: Easy solution for combining pets and security.
Disadvantages: As normal PIR disadvantages + great care is needed to install properly.
c). Passive infrared quad detector Passive infrared detectors are normally dual element meaning that both infrared elements need to be triggered before sending a signal to the control panel.  A quad detector had two dual elements  that all have to be triggered before sending a signal to the control panel giving a greater immunity to false alarms.

Advantages: Mid range price
Disadvantages: Tolerant of larger areas, greater tolerance of temperature changes.
d). Duel Technology detector A PIR detector & microwave detector combined, has all the features of a normal detector with the addition of microwave detection which is not affected by temperature which makes them very effective  for use in situations where there are large temperature fluctuations like conservatories. Also the microwave must be set correctly as it can monitor through walls.

Advantages: The best combination is not triggered by temperature changes, very reliable.
Disadvantages: Price
e). Glass break detectors  Detect the braking of all standard glass types and thickness whilst ignoring non-framed glass and other possible sources of false alarms.

Advantages: Easy install (with care) they can monitor a whole area of windows.
f). Vibration detectors  Detects the vibration of either a window being smashed or a opening being forced, again these detectors need careful installation to ensure correct operation.
g). Magnetic contacts The magnetic contact is used to monitor door and window openings.  They work well as a device that initiates the entry timer of the alarm when entering a property.

Advantages: Price and reliability.
Disadvantages: Easy to install but it can be difficult/unsightly to run cables to them.

Q. what are dimensions for Pyronic sterling ten polycarb end station? Can this panel lock out a zone after a set number of activations from that zone?

if you would like to contact Pyronix technical on the following telephone number 01709 700100 they will be able to advise you.

Q. Where do I install the detectors?

It is often the case in burglar alarm installation that the easiest solution is not always the best solution. PIR’s should be installed so that they are triggered by walking across the beam and not towards or away from it. They should not be placed in direct sunlight and they should not be placed where glass can refract sunlight onto them. Do not place them over fires or radiators or any other heat source. Conservatories, greenhouses and some garages should have duel technology detectors installed to cope with the temperatures in these areas. Small garages with 1 opening can normally use a quad PIR detector.

Q. What do I do about my pets?

Depending on the weight of the pet/s concerned you can install a pet immune PIR.  These detectors will allow your pet/s to move around within the area monitored by the detector without setting the alarm off.

Q. i hav just installed a accenta ade gen4 alarm with led keypad but whenever i start it up and put in the default code in the spanner symbol stays on i have linked all zones out and all tampers could you help me out

If you contact the manufacture Honeywell on the following number 01698 738570,  they will be able to give you the technical advice required

Q. What back up batteries do I need?

The only backup battery that you will need is the one for the control panel,
a rough size guide is as follows:

Control panel & up to 3 PIR’s 1.3ah battery
Control panel with remote keypad & up to 4 pir’s 2.4ah battery
Control panel with up to 3 remote keypads & 6 pir’s 3.4ah battery
Over the above quantities 7ah battery.

However, to work out properly the size of battery needed it is necessary to work out how much standby time is required (i.e. in the event of mains failure) and the amount of current that the system installed will require. The standby time should be at least 8 hours for Grade 1 systems and at least 15 hours for Grade 2 systems.  In order to comply with EN50131-6 the standby time should be at least 12 hours for both Grade 1 and 2 systems.

The table shows the rated output currents for the standard 12v burglar alarm battery sizes.

    Battery Standby time
    8hrs 12hrs 15hrs
 Battery Capacity 1.3ah 150ma 100ma 80ma
 Battery Capacity 2.4ah 263ma 175ma 140ma
 Battery Capacity 3.4ah 375ma 250ma 200ma
 Battery Capacity 7.0ah 600ma 583ma 467ma

Q. I have a Honeywell ADE Gen 4 alarm fitted approx 6 months ago. The main control panel is hidden away with an accompany key fob panel near the front door. The key fob panel has just stopped working. The main panel still works if I press in the numbers but the fobs seem completely dead. Any ideas how I can fix this much appreciated - thanks

.  If you contact the manufacture Honeywell on the following number 01698 738570,  they will be able to give you the technical advice required

Q. Can I install the alarm myself?

If you have some electrical experience then an alarm system should be within your scope.  Sighting and setting up of the detectors should be done with some thought and taking care to read the above instructions (“ Where do I install the detectors?”). Together with the manufacturers instructions to ensure trouble free operation without false alarms.

Q. How do I choose a control panel?

All of the control panels included in our site are good quality.  If you are not sure which panel to choose start with the complete alarm kits page looking for the nearest complete kit that suits your needs and then add any extra components that you require.

Q. Do I get full instructions?

Yes full manufacturers instructions are provided with all burglar alarm products including kits..

Q. Where do I provide power to the control panel?

Always ensure that you have isolated and switched off any electrical installations before you commence work. The best place to get power to the alarm control panel is directly from the consumer unit. The burglar alarm should have its own individual circuit protected by a 6a miniature circuit breaker.  The cable from the 6a mcb should be 1.5mm twin & earth sheathed cable, which runs into an unswitched fused 3a spur connection unit (supplied with our kits) that then wires into the alarm control panel.

If it is not possible to wire in directly to the consumer unit then it is possible to spur off of an existing circuit, again using the spur unit provided in our kits.  The cable from the existing circuit to the spur should be of the same size as the existing circuit.  We would recommend the use of a spike suppressor (Our code ‘SUP’) when spurring off of an existing circuit to avoid false alarms caused by mains spikes from other equipment on the same circuit.

  • Only connect the mains supply to the mains terminal block, NEVER directly to the PCB.
  • ALWAYS refer to the National Wiring Regulations when conducting an installation.
  • An appropriate & readily accessible disconnection device (e.g. An unswitched, fused 2a spur) MUST be provided as part of the installation.
  • The disconnection device must not be fitted with flexible cord.
  • Where identification of the neutral in the mains supply is NOT possible a two-pole disconnection device must be used.
  • The building mains must incorporate a short-circuit back-up device.
  • Use mains cable of adequate carrying capacity for the rated current (i.e. 1mm Twin & Earth 6242Y).

Q. I have had a really good experience with a Pyronix Sterling 10 alarm supplied by you some years ago. I am now in a house that needs 9 or 10 programmable zones, unfortunately the Sterling 10 has only 8. Is there a similar product to the Sterling 10 doing more zones? If there is not something similar, what would you recommend?

Q. What is DD243?

BSI DD 243: 2002 is a code of practice for the installation and confirmation of intruder alarm systems designed to generate confirmed alarm conditions. The document was written in response to the ACPO Security Systems Policy 2000 published by the Association of Chief Police Officers, which became effective on October 1st 2001.

It means that if you supply intruder alarm systems that require a police response, you may need to dramatically change the way you design and/or install those systems.
This applies to systems installed to BS4737, BS7042 or EN50131-1

This information was provided with permission from  the 'DD243' website, click for more information.

Q. when my alarm is not on when i walk into the room the sensor picks up and beeps at the alarm.

There could be two reasons for this;

  1. Your smoke alarm battery is low and is beeping
  2. The zone of the area that is beeping on your alarm panel is set to 'chime' which needs to be changed.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. is is possible to buy a new keypad and also a new panel. Both for the scantronic 916.How much are they?

Q. Hi I have recently installed a Veritas 8 alarm-do I need different type of PIR sensor in my conservatory as it going off intermittanly

A conservatory is a hostile environment for a PIR becasue of heat causing alot of thermal air movement.  Therefore we recommend two types of detector for conservatories:

c). Passive infrared quad detector Passive infrared detectors are normally dual element meaning that both infrared elements need to be triggered before sending a signal to the control panel.  A quad detector had two dual elements  that all have to be triggered before sending a signal to the control panel giving a greater immunity to false alarms.

Disadvantages: Price

Thank you for your enquiry.

Q. Can you supply me with user manuals as I have only recently moved into the house and the person I bought it off of has not left me any instructions.

We get a number of requests for replacement manuals.  There are two types of manual for a burglar alarm control panel.  One is the 'User Guide' which will give the user of the system information on how to get the most out of the alarm system.  Information like full setting, part setting, omitting a zone will be in here.  The other is the 'Engineer Manual' which gives information on installing the system, programming the panel, re-storing the panel to factory defaults etc.

We can supply 'User Guides', you will find these below stored in PDF format, you will need an  Adobe Acrobat Reader to download these.

We cannot supply 'Engineer Manuals'.  There are security implications to supplying these manuals, please contact the manufacturer of your intruder alarm panel for the information that you require.  If you have lost the user code for your control panel then it may be necessary to contact an approved local security alarm installation company who will come and reset your control panel for you.

Q. Is there a combined fire/ burglar alarm on the market?

Depending on how many smoke alarms you require most of the burglar alarm panels have the facility to add smoke and heat detectors to the panel. For example the   Texecom Premier range are compatible with 12v 2 and 4 wire smoke and heat detectors.  Texecom also produce a  comprehensive range of 12v smoke and heat detectors to give warning via the burglar alarm system should a fire break out on the property.

Q. I have a house that's 20+ years old and the house alarm was installed from new. It has detector blocks on downstairs windows and front & rear entry doors. It also has a motion detector in the main living area and external alarm bell. The alarm control box uses a key to set either 'all windows and doors' or those plus the motion detector. The make is Securitech Minisec/2. It has been giving me false alarm problems for several years, usually corrected by head scratching by an engineer, then installing a new back up battery. However, now this doesn't seem to remedy the problem because the alarm will not always reset, so it cannot be used. I am reluctant to install a new wireless, etc. system at present because my current one (when working) protects a wider range of points in the house. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to remedy the problem. I've had several trades people to look at the problem recently but again after installing a new battery the problem has not been resolved.

Good Morning Rob

After reading your email and looking through the Internet on this panel i can see allot of people say they have the same problems with this panel

as the panel is very old and not something i have dealt with before it would be difficult for me to suggest anything but a replacement system.

for a system to last more than 15years is extremely rare

if you would like further information on new alarms systems please contact me

Many thanks

Q. To: Nathan Swann Hi, thanks for your reply today, to my query about the problem with my 20+ year old Securitech Minisec/2 burglar alarm system. It may be that it's on it's last legs now as you say. You mentioned that you may have ideas on suitable replacements for my system, if so I would be grateful as to any recommendations you may have and if possible any ideas about what sort of cost they may be. Thanks Rob.

Good Morning Rob

I would suggest a kit for this as the whole system would need to be replaced

I would suggest KIT1 as i feel this would meet your requirements

Q. I have just moved in to a new house with a texecom veritas 8 compact burglar alarm. The precious owner told me the code was 1963 however i am unable to unset the alam with this code. Currently I am having to have the downstairs lights switch fuses turned off in the fuse box as everytime I turn this on the alarm goes off. Please help!

Good Morning Lee

Unfortunately without the engineers code it would be imposable to change the code on this alarm panel

also the faults you seems to be getting suggest the maybe a faulty on the unit and may have to be replaced

if this is the case i would suggest the Texecom V8C as a suitable panel for your needs

Many Thanks

Q. I have a prospective customer who wants an alarm for four seperate adjacent workshops in a small terrace. Each workshop has a seperate door and there is no door between them. He wants to be able to go into each workshop without having to unset a central alarm. He has some people who have access to one workshop but not the others. Is there a unit which would allow four seperate keypads to set/unset each of the four zones, each effectivly being an entry/exit zone. It may be acceptable if the whole system was disarmed /armed each time. Thanks in advance. Kevin

Q. If I am installing an alarm system myself, do I need to contact the manufacturer or an alarm engineer at any time during the intallation to start it properly?

You will not need to contact anyone during the installation, only if you have any problems. The control panels come complete with full user and installation books.

Q. I was looking at your KIT1 alarm system, and wondered whether these are supplied to you or you actually make them up yourself?

Yes we do make the kits up ourselves.  It is possible for you to choose the individual parts from our site to make up the kit that you need otherwise please email nott@alertelectrical and we will be pleased to help you with your selection.

Q. I have had a vertas alarm for approximately 10 years, it has now developed a fault. when the mains power is turned of (power cut) the outside alarm box "beeps" for approximately 8-10 Minutes. Once power is restored the the alarm panel shows each zone as red then the internal alarm sounds, this can only be silenced by turning the mains off or entering the engineer code. Subsequently the I then have to re-enter the entry code. Can you advise me, is this the battery which is housed in the main unit? or are there other areas that I should be checking (battery). I have both installation manuals however I dont appear to have any information on the vertias model. Thanks

Thank you for contacting Alert Electrical .  If you contact Texecom on the following number 01706 220460 they will be able to advise you further
