Q. Can you supply GET flat plate stainless steel sockets and switches with BLACK plastic trim instead of white?

As a traditional 'bricks and mortar' electrical wholesaler we make it our business to source slightly more unusual products for customers.

In answer to your question, yes we can get black plastic trim instead of white, the product code changes from a 'WSS' suffix to a 'BSS' suffix.

Have a look at this link: http://www.getplc.com/2004/html/main_frameset.htm

There is an example on the page.   The pricing would be the same as the white plastic trim.

Q. I understand there are new rules about the electrical jobs I can do in my own home?

That's correct. From 1st January 2005 new rules in the Building Regulations for England & Wales mean that most electrical jobs in your home must be carried out by a registered installer or be approved and certified by your local authority's Building Control department. The Government has introduced these changes to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by faulty electrical work and to make it harder for 'cowboy builders' to leave electrical installations in an unsafe condition.

This means that many jobs which could have been done by a handy DIY person may now need to be done by a qualified electrician. Small jobs like replacing a socket or light switch on an existing circuit can still be carried out by a competent DIYer, unless it's in a bathroom or kitchen or outdoors, but other jobs need to comply with Part P of Building Regulations.

Put simply, if you intend to have electrical work done in your home either get an approved electrician to do it or contact the Building Control department at your local authority before the work starts. They will advise you on what you need to do to stay safe and stay legal.

If you don't comply with these new regulations then you could face a stiff fine. You may also find it difficult to get your home insured or to sell your house if you do not have the right certificates showing the electrical work has been carried out legally.

The following is a useful reference :

Work you can do yourself

  • Replacing existing accessories such as lights, sockets outlets, ceiling roses, switches, fused spurs etc
  • Adding lighting points to an existing circuit in other locations like dining rooms, lounges or bedrooms
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting existing equipment

Work you cannot do yourself

  • Complete new or rewiring job
  • Fuse box change
  • Adding lighting points to an existing circuit in a “special location” like the kitchen, bathroom or garden
  • Installing electrical earth connections to pipework and metalwork
  • Adding a new circuit

Further information on the new regulations can be found at: http://www.odpm.gov.uk/electricalsafety
