The Digi-Line electric radiator range are filled with a thermal fluid to transfer heat to the whole of the surface area without the need for any pump or moving parts. The fluid is heated by 100% efficiency electric elements which are controlled by the most advanced thermostat electronics available. The radiator body is constructed in steel and powder coated to ensure a high quality, extremely long lasting and robust finish. The range is available in 500mm & 300mm heights and power ratings from 500 watts to 2000 watts. Single panel and double panel radiators are available, and both have convection fins to ensure the perfect balance of radiant and convection heat.

 There are some very special, unique and energy saving features built into the Digi-Line electric radiator electronics. All features do not have to be used but can be activated if required.

1. Energy saving open window feature. this sense when a window has been opened and stops the radiator heating until the window is closed.
2. Surface temperature control. The surface temperature can be operated at the full 90 deg C or reduced to a maximum of 75 deg C or a maximum of 60 deg C. Surface temperature reduction will reduce the heating power.
3. Double panel radiator smart control. If the room temperature is within 1 deg C of the set point, the front panel only will operate. If the room temperature is more than 1 deg C from the set point, the back panel will also operate to act as a boost and re-heat the room faster.

The New Digi-Line thermostat is a double proportional band control (PI & PWM) giving the best accuracy possible of +/- 0.1 deg C. The room temperature is sensed below the radiator where the room air temperature is at its lowest and there is no heat from the radiator to affect the reading. Whether at home or work, we are surrounded by computers, smart phones and TV’s along with our dependency upon the use of appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers and systems such as fire or intruder alarms. These devices can all be vulnerable to transient over-voltages, which can significantly reduce an equipment’s lifespan through degradation and damage. Over-voltages can come from sources such as lightning or switching on or off inductive loads.

Protection can be given to help prevent such damage through the inclusion of ‘Surge Protection Devices (SPD). This protection isn’t always mandatory but they’re becoming more of the norm to help protect valuable data and equipment.

1. A bolt of lightning
One of the threats to devices is lighting. A discharge from lightning near a power supply cable could generate a significant over-voltage transient and cause damage.

2. Terminology
Surge protection devices are classified according to their standard into different types. There are three types of surge protection device:

• Type 1 – This can discharge partial lighting current and commonly employs spark gap technology
• Type 2 – This version can help prevent the spread of over-voltages in electrical installations and help protect connected equipment
• Type 3 – These are only required to be installed as a supplement to Type 2 and have a low discharge capacity.

When installing a surge protection device, you should refer to BS 7671 for the correct regulations.

3. Getting the right connection
Making sure a connection is correct is vital when using surge protection devices. To obtain the maximum protection from the SPD, the connecting conductors should be kept as short as possible. This is to minimise any additive voltages on the connecting cables.

4. Inspection & Testing
Surge protection devices can offer a visual indication to help with the inspection and testing process. Usually colour coded, if a green light is displayed then this means the device is operational. If a red light is displayed however, it means that the device has reached its end and needs replacing.

How do you define a space heater?

Local room (or space) heating products are defined as appliances that provide heat to indoor spaces by generating heat in the location within which they are situated. Like other product categories, the aim is to rule out inefficient technologies and reduce the energy used in our homes, helping to achieve our overall carbon reduction targets..

All heater types have been assessed to give each technology its own level playing field. The legislation does not seek to promote one technology above another; to support or deny the claims of manufacturers about their own products; or to disadvantage customer groups with a particular investment or interest in a particular technology.

Instead, all improvements derive from enhanced controls which must be adopted to earn the efficiency improvements required of each heater type. Where controls are electronic they may either be Integrated or External to the heater.The legislation anticipates that significant energy savings can be achieved by more accurately heating rooms when the heat is required and reducing wasted energy from overheating.

Using external controls, LOT 20 recognises that external control systems are a significant factor in improving efficiencies and encouraging the use of effective zoning. Unless they are mechanical, it is NOT the case that controls need to be integrated into the heater itself.

How LOT 20 Works:

All heater types are given a baseline “seasonal space heating efficiency” figure and must reach a corrected target to become compliant. They can be classified “Best Available” by exceeding this target.  The target varies by heater category type, and can be met or exceeded by adding controls which are deemed to add efficiencies.

Will It Increase Costs?

Lot 20 requires that the consumption and emissions for local space heaters must be reduced by applying “existing, non-proprietary technologies” without an increase in the combined costs of purchasing and operating the products. 

In order for manufacturers to comply their products will have to meet the minimum efficiency target for that class of  heater and have the necessary controls available to compliment  the heater(s).  

What About Old Heaters?

Lot 20 applies to electric space heaters manufacturred after 1st January 2018.  It does not apply to products manufactured before that date, either already purchased or currently in stock at your electrical wholesaler or distributor.

The three compliance measures for F3 in the above formula are:

Distance Control Option 

Allows remote interaction from outside the building in which the product is installed, e.g. use of an app. to delay the heating from coming on when you are home late to save energy.

Adaptive Start Control 

Predicts and initiates the optimal start up of heating in order to reach the set point temperature at the desired time. This means that the minimum energy is used to get a room to temperature, rather than it being heated up too early because of poor user estimation (on at 6am to be warm at 7am etc.)

Open Window Sensing 

Integrated into the product. The product shuts down when a window is open to save energy. This is done by monitoring output against temperature rise, and stopping if the correlation is negative.

Storage Heaters

The standard ranges of manual, auto and combi will be replaced by smart models with 7 day timers, temperature sensing, window sensing and adaptive start.

Panel Heaters

Models with side mount controls, rotart thermostats, 'No controls', 24hr timers will be replaced by smart models with 7 day timers, temperature sensing, window sensing and adaptive start.

Unaffected Products

Secondary heating products like Towel Rails and tubular heaters.

Electric Sockets should be located so that they are easily reachable.  Part M of the building regulations and BS 7671 concerning the height of switches and sockets states that a person with limited use should be able to reach them easily (Scotland is not included).

For habitable rooms in new buildings electrical sockets should be placed a minimum of 450mm from the floor and no closer than 350mm to any corner. These regulations do no apply to uninhabited rooms such as kitchens and garages.

Lastly make sure they are installed with a spirit level, nothing so annoying as a wonky socket!

Which Sockets Are Best?

White moulded electrical sockets are still by far the most popular.  Within this there are square edged or rounded edged switches to choose from depending on the style required.  Then there are the decorative sockets in a range of different finishes and styles.  Weatherproof sockets designed to be mounted outdoors and metalclad sockets designed for garage or workshop use. Finally there are the industrial sockets that are colour coded for the voltage that they are designed to carry with a specific pin layout for the number of circuits.  The common colours are yellow; 110v 3 pin deisnged for portable equipment on building site.  Blue 230v ~ 240v 3 pin for warehouses etc. and Red 415v 3 phase, either 4 pin 3 ph + N or 5 pin 3 ph + N + E.

Who Invented Electrical Sockets?

When electricity was first introduced into houses, it was primarily used for lighting. At that time, many electricity companies operated a split-tariff system where the cost of electricity for lighting was lower than that for other purposes. This led to portable appliances (such as vacuum cleaners, electric fans, and hair driers) being connected to light bulb sockets using lampholder plugs.^[19]

As electricity became a common method of operating labour-saving appliances, a safe means of connection to the electric system other than using a light socket was needed. Thomas Tayler Smith of London, England received British patent 4162 in 1882 for an "Electric-Circuit Connection" to "enable the electric conductors conveying the current to one or more lamps, or along a flexible cord, to be rapidly and safely brought into connection with the line or main wires". Smith subsequently received US patent 311,616^[20] for the same device in 1885. According to British Author John Mellanby^[21] there were British patents for plug and sockets granted to T.T. Smith in 1883 (No. 3883) and W. B. Sayers & G. Hookham in 1884, (No. 16655). Mellanby also writes that there were two-pin designs by 1885, one of which appears in the (British) General Electric Company Ltd. catalogue of 1889. Gustav Binswanger, a German immigrant who founded the (British) General Electric Company Ltd, obtained a patent (GB189516898) in 1895 for a plug and socket using a concentric (co-axial) contact system.

How Do Electrical Sockets Work?

1. Terminal screws secure Live, neutral and earth conductors

2. Thre earth cable allows electricity to travel to earth in the event of a short circuit.This cable is coloured green and yellow.

3. The neutral cable carries electricity back to complete the circuit.  This cable is coloured blue.

4. A back box, either flush glavalnised, or a surface patress made from the same material as the socket.

5.  Rubber grommets are fitted to the 20mm knock out hole in the steel glavanised back box to protect the cable.

6. Twin & Earth cable contains the LIVE, NEUTRAL and EARTH conductors. 

7. The LIVE cable carries electricity to the appliance.  This is the conductor thaty is switched.  The colour of the conductor is brown.

8. Socket with the electrical terminals mounted on its rear.

9. Terminals connect the live, neutral and earth conductors.  They are secured by the terminal screws, there should not be any bare conductor showing outside of the terminal.

Who Invented Light Switches?

The first light switch we can find was invented by John Henry Homes in 1884 in Newcastle Upon Tyne in England.  The ‘quick break’ switch overcame the problems of arcing when the circuit was opened or closed.  Holmes invention insured that the contacts opened and closed very quickly, giving insufficient time for an arc to form. Quick break technology is still used commonly today.

How Do Light Switches Work?

Light switches are commonly manufactured in 1 to 6 gang.  Gang means the number of rocker switches on the plate, each rocker switch will control one circuit.  Light switches are 1 way, 2 way or intermediate. 1 way means a set of lights are controlled from 1 switch, 2 way means a set of lights are controlled from 2 switches, commonly at 2 exits.  Intermediate is a switch for mounting between 2 - 2 way light switches to allow a set of lights to be controlled by 3 switches. Further options include dimmer switches or toggle switches.

• Wall lights can be task lights, lighting up certain areas where activities or work are carried out.  
• Wall lights can be mood lights, particularly when connected to a dimmer circuit and / or separated from the rest of the lights in the area. The design of the wall lights also add greatly to the room's overall design and can be the finishing touch in an overall design scheme.
• Wall lights can provide ambient light, they can be the main source of overall light in the room or area.

The issue with wall lights is the wiring required.  The ideal time to install wall lights is as part of a new building or full room re-design. Preferably the wall lights should be on their own electrical circuit so that they can be individually controlled via a switch or a dimmer, normally at one or two entry points to the room.

Wall lights can be the only light source but we recommend installing them alongside a ceiling pendant fitting, table lights and pedestal lights. Pedestal and table lights can also be on their own electrical circuit controlled at the same point as the wall lights.

However, while LED lighting can be very good for mood or task lighting, using LED as a main source of ambient light (back ground light) needs to be carried out with care.  For example, the city council in Edinburgh turned up the brightness of their new LED street lamps and luminaires after locals residents complained that energy efficient LEDS left areas of dark shadow. Conventional light sources cast a lot of light backwards, which in most cases is lost energy, the LED on the other hand casts light in one direction.

In offices energy efficient LED lay in modular fittings are 36w where as their fluorescent counterparts are 72w.  While fluorescent light is much more energy efficient than incandescent lighting, they are not environmentally friendly having mercury gas within the fluorescent tube.  LED lay in modular fittings are still 50% more energy efficient that fluorescent.  LEDs have longer lamp life and the lumen degradation over the lifetime of the lamp is less, LED lamps retain as much as 90% of their maximum output at the end of their life cycle.

LEDs are far more durable than incandescent and fluorescent lights; LEDs can last for typically 50,000 hours, with many lasting up to 80,000 hours, while incandescent or fluorescent lights typically offer a 10,000 hour lifespan. LEDs are suitable for a wide range of environments; they offer safer lighting levels in factories and warehouses.  LED stands for 'Light Emitting Diode', which is a solid-state semiconductor light source. LED lighting is a popular choice of low energy lighting because it offers exceptional energy saving properties.

The main advantage is the high luminous efficiency which was 18-22 lumens per watt in 2002, compared to conventional 60-100W incandescent light bulbs which only emit around 15 lumens per watt. The development of LED technology has caused their efficiency and light output to rise exponentially with a doubling occurring approximately every 36 months since the 1960s. in 2011 LEDs reached a new level of efficiency emitting 450 to 650 lumens from a 6W LED. This output is equivalent to a 40W incandescent bulb and a typical 13W LED in 2009.

Additionally, because re-lamping costs are reduced though the longer lifespan of LED lamps, there is reduced waste going to landfill which also has a positive environmental impact.

Recessed lighting was very fashionable.  Why not, with a range of finishes, downlighters can be made to fit almost anywhere.  Some downlighters can be mounted in a ceiling void depth of just 60mm.  However, in the home just adding a dozen downlights in the ceiling can create a harsh light which doesn’t add to the environment. This light can be dimmed to make it acceptable but it misses that opportunity to add a decorative light to make the finishing touch in an overall room design scheme.

In rooms with low ceilings and an accessible ceiling void, recessed downlighters are a good solution, they definitely avoid some bruised heads!  Recessed lighting is very popular in offices where the light level can be controlled very accurately.  PIRs and daylight harvesting ensure minimal waste of electricity. With the advent of LED lamp technology recessed light fittings in the office or commercial environment can lead to huge savings in energy consumption. 

Outside there is a range of recessed lighting for the wall, path and driveway.  Outside recessed lighting has a dual function, as a task light to light the way and as accent lighting they can take the premises to another level when installed correctly.

In The Kitchen

Forget those symmetrical grids of 4, 9, 12 downlights covering the ceiling.  Place downlights over the kitchen island or worktop. If you have high level cupboards it might be better to go for under cupboard lights, this avoids casting shadows when the person is working over the worktop.  The latest LED strip lights are very low profile, give a good light output and because they are LED with very little wattage, they also give off very little heat.  The same applies to the kitchen sink, if there are no high level cupboards go for a downlight.

In The Bathroom

If the mirror above the sink has no light then consider a downlight.  Above the shower cubicle.  The bathroom and in particular the shower cubicle is a harsh environment for a light but there are IP Rated downlights designed specifically for the purpose.

What Are Fire Rated Downlights

In the event of a fire, downlights can expose the building to a weakness that the fire can exploit to spread from room to room.  Plasterboard contains the fire but if there is a downlight the fire can gain access to the ceiling void, wooden joists and the room or loft beyond.  Fire rated downlights contain a means of holding back the fire tested for a minimum amount of time, normally 60 minutes or 90 minutes.  If the downlight is not fire rated then it is also possible to achieve a fire barrier by installing a Fire Hood behind each downlight.  For more on the subject please see the PDF provided by the Electrical Safety Council Page 8.

Hanging lanterns are designed to be hung from a ceiling in porches, exits and conservatories.

Wall Lanterns

There are 3 main categories of wall lantern;

• Up lanterns, that point upwards
• Down lanterns pointing downwards
• And half lanterns designed to fit flush to the wall

Many lantern styles will blur the boundaries of where they sit e.g.some up lanterns look like half lanterns, but these are the general rules and terminologies that we use.

Post & Bollard Lanterns 

Bollard lanterns are designed to be floor mounted or on the top of walls, these are small vertical lanterns that look great in a hard landscaped gardens, pathways  and driveways. Post lanterns are longer than bollard lanterns and are normally mounted directly on the path, drive or garden.

A short guide to make choosing outdoor lighting for your next project as easy as possible;

Decorative or functional?

What are the outdoor lights for? Are they decorative outdoor lights to make the house or office look beautiful and set the tone for the facade?  Are they there to provide an accent to the facade or provide a real level of  light for the building?

Decorative lights include lanterns, modern contemporary shapes and LED strips.  They come in a number of styles, wall lights, post lights, bollard lights, guide lights, etc. It is a good idea to have a look around the internet for a feel of the different styles, you can find alertelectrical.com's range here Outdoor lighting.

Is the light primarily more functional?  Functional does not have to mean ugly, particularly with the emergence of LED technology making floodlights much smaller than they used to be when they had to previously house a large light bulb.  Functional lights include flood lights and bulkhead lights.  Bulkhead lights in particular come in a large range of styles and finishes to suit most decors.  Security lights usually are a floodlight or bulkhead light with a sensor for detecting movement included, some now include cameras.

Choose the light level carefully

If you are from the old school (like me) that judged light output in watts have a look at our Lumens & Lighting guide which shows the equivalent LED bulb output.  A 'zoned' approach is the best option;  Zone 1, outdoor wall lights for the main building and entrances, Zone 2, pathway lighting and accent or task lighting  (like around a barbeque or seating area) and finally Zone 3, mood lights like garden lighting sited within flower borders.  These can then be controlled from a wall switch, dimmer or via smart lighting controls. Where a zoned or layered approach has been taken, going for slightly more lights in total works well as they can easily be split by having just 1 or 2 zones on which can create a nice effect. 

Bulkheads make a more subdued effect around entrances, we would not advocate putting floodlights in these and other communal areas as the glare can be very harsh.  Floodlights are better sited away from the house lighting up the outlying areas.  Floodlights can also be used as a security light or can be used to light large walls and facades.

Choose the colour of the bulb

Exteriors are normally warm white for homes and cool white for commercial buildings but this can vary depending on the colour and style of the exterior.  Gardens can benefit from different colour bulbs depending on the plants and flowers.  For more information please have a look at lightbulb colour temperatures.

How are the lights going to be controlled?

Simple switches, located in the house or weatherproof outside the house.

Automatically via a dusk to dawn photocell, maybe also including a timer to control how long the lights are on for.  

PIR sensors to detect movement and switch the lights on for a short period of time.

Smart lighting wirelessly controlled via keypad or smartphone are great for allowing different effects.  Individual lights, just a few or all of the lights  can be switched on without large amounts of wiring to install.

A few rules to make choosing the wall lights for your next project as easy as possible;

Decide the purpose of your wall lights.

What are the wall lights for, are they decorative wall lights to make the room look beautiful?  Are they there to provide an accent to the room or provide a real level of background light for the room? If the lights are for a room that is already fairly bright then the chosen wall light does not need to be too powerful.  If you are relying on the lights as a source of light or they are going to be located in a dark corner or alcove then they need to be more powerful.

Choose the light level carefully

More is better here, especially if there is control over the lights like a lighting dimmer.  Discuss with the electrician from the outset what your ideas are.  If you are having wall lights fitted would you like them on a separate circuit so that the wall lights can be controlled independently from the other lights in the room.

Living rooms usually require warm white to create a warm cosy feeling.  Kitchens and bathrooms can be either cool white or warm white depending on the style of the room.  Many traditional kitchens and bathrooms are warm white while many modern contemporary kitchens and bathrooms are cool white but this rule is by no means set in stone.  Exteriors are normally warm white for homes and cool white for commercial buildings but this can vary depending on the colour and style of the exterior.  For more information please have a look at lightbulb colour temperatures.

Match the wall lights to the rooms decor

Wall lights can make a huge impact on a room. Not only can they be the finishing touch in creating a style, when switched on the light they provide also provides an atmosphere to the room. You can match the wall light to the pendant light in the centre of the room or consider multiple wall lights, especially where the room is long like a corridor or hallway, lights in a row can have a dramatic effect.
The wall light should match the rooms decor style, but the choice of colour matching or contrasting is up to the individual. In traditional rooms brass looks good while in contemporary settings chrome is the most popular finish, either polished or satin.  Keep the style consistent across the room or floor or go the whole hog and go for the same look across the whole house.
All this talk of consistency, but there is one thing - mismatching! :)  If you are brave enough why not go for lights that do not match each other for an overall look that works.  We are describing the common rules for choosing wall lights but you don’t have to stick rigidly to them! 

Position of the wall lights.

The optimum position is usually around 5 feet or eye level.  Don’t be afraid to change up things or ignore the rules if necessary, for example if there is a desk, lower the light to create a wall mounted desk light or a where there is a feature or picture higher up.  A classic place where this can be used to maximum effect is either side of the bed to free up space on top of the bedside table.

IP RATINGS IN BATHROOMS

The bathroom area has been divided up into 'zones' or areas which are classified using the numbers 0-2.    Light fittings are then assigned an IP rating which indicates how much protection they provide against ingress of water and other particles. Each zone has a minimum IP requirement that must be met if a fitting is to be installed in this area.

These are the visual lights that can been seen in the kitchen.  This is the first step in the thought process.  Next should be the light that will set the mood in the kitchen like the cabinet lights shown above that can be mounted either inside a display cabinet, beneath the cupboard or in the plinth just above the floor.  In addition to these products there is also LED Strip that can be used and is easy to install. This lighting is very useful  for all the lighting styles; they provide ambient light, working light and they make a big difference to the atmosphere.

We have not shown recessed lighting, mainly because there is not that much to see.  Recessed lighting should be used for task lighting around the work areas, sometimes it is used as the main source of ambient lighting but is not usually recommended.

Obvious, but it’s the best place to start, usually on the packaging or somewhere around the lamp holder on the light fitting.

Colour

WARM WHITE – 2500K TO 3300K - Creates a warm soothing atmosphere, think of the colour of a natural candle flame.  Ideal for living rooms, lounges, restaurants.

COOL WHITE – 3700K – 4500K - Crisp white light, feels clean and a good working environment.  Kitchens , bathrooms, offices, classrooms, car showroom

When Choosing New Lighting

Ambient lighting – Back ground lighting that provides the main lighting level.  This can be made up of ambient lighting specific light fittings like ceiling pendants in the home or LED lay on panels in the office.  Alternatively other lights designed for task lighting or mood lighting can provide ambient light provided that enough are used.

Task lighting – Lighting to enable work in specific areas like bathroom mirror lights, kitchen under cupboard lights, desk lights in the office.

Mood lighting  – Floor lamps with warm white bulbs, picture lights , wall lights can all help mood lighting. 

It is useful to understand the various kinds of lighting, Ambient, Task, and Mood, but it is also useful to understand that different lights can cross the 3 different areas quite easily depending on how they are used and the application.  Mood lighting is also influenced by the windows and the décor of the room.

Lighting Circuits

Make sure that you have discussed with your electrician your lighting plans so that the different forms of lighting can be split by circuit.  For example, if the electrician is warned in time a specific 5a lighting circuit can be installed at floor level to control floor standing lights from a wall mounting light switch. 

Next time you shop, if like me you know if you need a 60w or a 100w bulb, look for a LED bulb of 700 lumens or 1300 lumens respectively.

LED stands for ‘Light Emitting Diode’, a diode designed to make light at certain wavelengths.  LEDs have been used extensively in instrument panels but have only recently made the move in to more mainstream lighting. They do not need to be placed in a vacuum or in any gas.  LEDs produce as much light as an incandescent light bulb while using less than 20% of the electricity. 

Heat

LEDs achieve their light output while producing far less heat than an incandescent light bulb. Incandescent and halogen light bulbs produce much more heat than LEDs and it is this heat that can be dangerous in the wrong situation.  The dangers of incandescent and more so Halogen are;

• Burn risk – Be very careful not to handle a bulb that has been switched on for a long time.
• Sun burn – Some halogen bulbs emit UV in the spectrum that causes sun burn
• Fire Risk – The high temperature on the surface of the bulb, or light fitting through dissipating the heat, can pose a significant fire risk if installed poorly.
• Exploding Bulb – There is a danger from broken glass if the vacuum in an incandescent bulb is suddenly released.

Regardless of the type of bulb, it is essential to install lights and LED bulbs correctly being careful to follow manufacturer’s instructions.  However, given that LED light bulbs are safer than incandescent and halogen because they run at lower temperatures.  Given that LED light bulbs are safer than fluorescent because they do not have dangerous gases.  Given this, LED light bulbs are a safer option than their counterparts with older technology.

First Digit - Protection against ingress of foreign bodies e.g. tools, dust, fingers, etc.

Second Digit - Protection against ingress of liquids. e.g. IP44 is protection against solid objects greater than 1mm IP4X and waters sprayed from all directions IPX4.

IP Ratings In Bathrooms

The bathroom area has been divided up into 'zones' or areas which are classified using the numbers 0-2.    Light fittings are then assigned an IP rating which indicates how much protection they provide against ingress of water and other particles. Each zone has a minimum IP requirement that must be met if a fitting is to be installed in this area.

You can fit an MR16 12v LED reflector bulb that then is a direct replacement for the low voltage downlight.  You do not need the services of an electrician, however  MR16 12v bulbs  are not always compatible with all transformers and the life of a transformer is not unlimited.

Low voltage recessed downlights have an in line 12v transformer taking the voltage from 240v down to 12v and then, depending on output, feeding from 1 up to anything but normally not more that 12.  They were fitted in a number of ways;

• With an individual transformer feeding each individual downlight.
• With a 100va or 150va transformer feeding 3 to 4 downlights.
• 1 big transformer feeding multiple downlights.

The best way to change the bulb in downlights from low voltage 12v to LED bulbs is to remove the 12v transformer and feed 230v directly to GU10 LED bulbs 230v.  

Assuming that you are going the GU10 LED route, if the transformer you are removing feeds mutiple downlights we recommend using the Click Flow system.  It is inexpensive, easy to fit and makes it easy to change fittings in future. 

The lampholder for the old LV lamps needs to be changed to a GU10 230v lampholder

Retro fitting the existing downlights with GU10 230v LED bulbs or MR16 12v LED bulbs has the benefit that the existing downlights and decor are not affected.  

GU10 LED bulbs are very energy efficient and have a lamp life in excess of their low voltage counterparts.  This means less maintenance and less re-lamping.

GU10 LED bulbs run much cooler, meaning the air temperature surrounding the downlights stays cooler.  Depending on the GU10 bulb selected they can be dimmed without the need for a specialist dimmer.

Finally, leave changing from MR16 12v to GU10 230v  to a qualified electrician.  Although it is relatively straightforward there are safety issues wtih electrical joints between floors and should be left to the experts.

But What Colour Do I Need To Buy?

So far it sounds complicated but it isn’t.  Light bulb colour temperature is measure in Kelvin.  Low Kelvin starting at 1500k is an orange colour light while a high kelvin gives a cool blue light at 7500k.

Warm White – 2500k to 3300k

Creates a warm soothing atmosphere, think of the colour of a natural candle flame.  Ideal for living rooms, lounges, restaurants.

White – 3500k

Cool White – 3700k – 4500k

Crisp white light, feels clean and a good working environment.  Kitchens , bathrooms, offices, classrooms, car showrooms.

Daylight – 6000k – 7000k

Used by printers or design offices, it gives a better reproduction of the colour that are being viewed, also museums, art galleries, clothes shops, jewellery shops, places where an accurate colour reproduction is important.

How Do I Find The Information When I Am Buying

Each bulb should have the colour temperature clearly marked on the package.  They do not all indicate 'warm white' or 'cool white' but the kelvin should be marked.  In addition the kelvin should also be marked on the lamp base.

Which Types Of LED Bulb To Buy For The Home

The most common types are the GLS and Candle bulbs shown above.  These are what is normally found in ceiling pendant lights, floor lights and desk lights.  If there are downlighters in the ceiling then the most common will be either MR16 low voltage reflectors or GU10 240v reflectors, also shown above.  Normally in the home, outside of kitchens and bathrooms it is better to go for ‘Warm White’.  This is expressed in ‘Kelvin’ between 2800 and 3300k. Which Types Of LED Bulb To Buy For The Kitchen And Bathroom

There can be a whole host of different LED bulbs found in the kitchens and bathrooms. Recessed downlighters are common, normally the bulb is MR16 low voltage reflectors or GU10 240v reflectors.  Then for task lighting and accent lighting under pelmet lights and plinth lights are used.  These can be tubular bulbs or LED strips which are self-adhesive and not renewable.  One thing to note about kitchens and bathrooms is that it is the choice of the home owner to use warm white light (expressed in ‘Kelvin’ between 2800 and 3300k) to create a warm, calming soothing light or a cool white light between 3500k and 5000k to create a crisp, clean, bright light. Amendment 3 Wiring regulations - Key Facts

The amended regulations include changes to:

• the electrical condition report section
• new requirements for mobile and transportable electrical units
• the installation of luminaires and light fittings, bringing them in line with the latest international and European standards

It also includes a NEW Regulation 421.1.201, which requires that within domestic (household) premises, consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies shall comply with BS EN 61439-3 and shall have their enclosure manufactured from non-combustible material, or enclosed in a cabinet or enclosure constructed of non-combustible material and complying with Regulation 132.12.

This has been introduced as a result of London Fire Brigade reporting that a rising number of domestic house fires were being caused as the result of the consumer units catching fire. The purpose of this Regulation is to contain any fire within the enclosure and to minimise flames from escaping, caused mainly as a result of poorly installed connections and poorly located units in the home.

Whilst metal (steel) enclosures are deemed to offer the best non-combustible characteristics, any installed consumer units with plastic enclosures is not necessarily a fire risk if the consumer unit and its incorporated components conform to the relevant product standard(s), do not have latent defects, and have been installed correctly to the manufacturer’s instructions. It is however, better to be safe than sorry!
