Lumens And Lighting

Lumens And Lighting
June 7, 2017

Previously we used to use the measurement for light bulb brightness of Watts.  This was only ever a rough measurement but with the growth of LED light bulbs which produce the same light output for much less wattage it is no longer a suitable measure.

Lumens

-          The measurement of visible light emitted from a source – Brightness

LED

-          Light emitting diode muse up to 80% less energy than their Incandescent counterpart

Incandescent

-          Traditional filament light bulbs – Large amount of wasted energy through heat.

Halogen

-          Halogen gas with a tungsten filament - Large amount of wasted energy through heat.

Compact Fluorescent

-          CFL fluorescent tubes with mercury   filled gas that fluoresce.  More efficient than incandescent and     halogen but not as efficient as LED.  Dangerous gases that should be disposed of through proper         waste disposal.

Next time you shop, if like me you know if you need a 60w or a 100w bulb, look for a LED bulb of 700 lumens or 1300 lumens respectively.

LED light bulbs are now available to buy in most traditional bulb shapes that are available.  Have a look in the bulb section of the website to see what types are available and feel free to contact us if you would like more information
